Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. Post doc in production technology specializing in process monitoring and control of additive manufacturing and welding

Production Technology West (PTW) has been a prioritized research environment at University West since 2008. PTW is organized in three divisions (division of welding technology, division of additive and subtractive manufacturing and division of production systems), each with a well-defined research strategy.

Role description
The position mainly comprises research in the field of automation technology with a focus on monitoring and control of laser and arc welding processes and/or additive manufacturing of metals. The focus of the research is experimental with focus on sensor technology and sensor-based control. 

The research group is multidisciplinary and cooperation between researchers is central. The research includes development of new methods and implementation of process monitoring and control, planning and executing of validation experiments, evaluation of these through different scientific methods, writing of reports, journal articles and presenting the results at project meetings and conferences. Other important tasks is to participate in supervision of undergraduate students, act as a mentor to PhD students, participation in research applications and other teaching activities.

Qualifications
Candidates applying for the post doc position must have obtained a PhD degree in production technology or a similar field. The applicants who have obtained a PhD degree in three years or less prior to the end of the application deadline will be given priority.

Additional employment requirements:

  • Documented research expertise in the subject field.
  • Focused area of expertise and relevant scientific publications in the field of signal processing and machine vision, experimental implementation and validation.
  • Ability to cooperate multidisciplinary.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Qualifications of merit for the position:

  • Knowledge in machine learning, controller design and strategy, sensor systems design, heat transfer modelling and laser materials processing.
  • Experience in experimental work within welding based processes.
  • Experience of supervision of candidates leading to a bachelor or master degree.
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish.

Assessment criteria
Special importance will be given to scientific skills in the subject field. In addition, the degree of administrative proficiency will be assessed. Furthermore, the degree of skill in developing and leading technical activities at the university will be considered, as well as the ability to interact with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work.

Terms of employment
The employment will be full-time for a duration of two years.
