Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.

Professor in automation technology specializing in automatic control and inspection of manufacturing processes

The flexible industrial automation research group at University West performs research within automatic control and inspection. Today’s applications are mainly within welding related processes and one important direction is additive manufacturing using laser welding technology. The research involves various measurements and signal processing technologies for automatic control. The applications pose strong efforts on synchronized data acquisition with signal processing for analysis, monitoring, inspection and control of the process in question. The collected data emanates mainly from non-contact sensors and/or embedded signals in the process equipment. The research is performed both experimentally and by modeling/simulation.

Duties
It is expected that the professor will contribute to the scientific leadership of the research group in flexible industrial automation. The professor is also expected to develop attractive courses and supervise students at undergraduate and PhD level within the subject field. Other important aspects of the position include planning and implementation of research projects and writing proposals for external research funding.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience of conducting independent research that significantly exceed what is required for associate professor according to practice in the field of automation technology with focus on automatic control and inspection.
  • Demonstrated pedagogical skills. Applicants who do not have a pedagogical education are expected to undergo such training within the first two years of the employment.

The position also requires:

  • Experience in applied research in data acquisition with signal processing for analysis, non-contact measurements monitoring and inspection and control of manufacturing processes.
  • Experience of academic leadership and ability to develop education and research in collaboration with colleagues and the community at large.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to fully carry out the duties of the appointment in collaboration with the rest of the group.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English is expected.

The following skills will be considered meritorious:

  • Ability to lead and implement research projects.
  • Experience of applying for and obtaining external research funding.
  • Experience of research within the area of welding and additive manufacturing.

Assessment criteria
Special importance will be given to the scientific and pedagogical skills in the subject field, as well as the ability to develop research- and educational activities in collaboration with colleagues and the surrounding community. The subject field and the work tasks will be taken into account when evaluating the applicant’s skills.

Terms of employment
The employment is a permanent position on 20 %.
