Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 15,000 students and 675 employees.

Associate senior lecturer in informatics with specialization in work-integrated learning – Research and learning with virtual and mixed reality

Subject area
Industrial work-integrated learning (I-WIL) is a new, prioritized area of the university and important for a strong collaboration with the business sector. I-WIL is part of the KK-environment PRIMUS https://www.hv.se/forskning/kk-miljon-primus/ and will transfer and further develop the WIL research and education, with a particular focus on co-production with the dynamic industrial sector. I-WIL is an interdisciplinary subject linked to reference disciplines such as organizational science, business administration, computer science, production systems, pedagogy, sociology, media and communication science and cognitive science. The subject matter should relate to one or more perspectives as illustrated in the following contextual description.

Two of the most important applications of VR on product design are virtual prototyping (VP) and simulation-based design (SBD). By utilizing VR and other advanced technologies, VP allows testing of alternative design ideas. The cost of using VP is much lower than when using “real” prototypes. At the same time VP provides a high level of accuracy of design analysis. Presenting significant building or engineering 3D-models in VR is often a crucial part of the planning, construction and maintenance phases in terms of application and understanding. Especially in complex or large-scale models, immersion is one of the major key factors for being able to intuitively perceive all aspects of the scene. A fully immersive system needs to give the user a large field-of-view with reduced latency for lifelike impression. Technologies such as VR can deliver high refresh rates, yet fail to give a large field-of-view.

The associate senior lecturer's scientific work
This position will be a fundamental part of building I-WIL’s research area (I-WIL) in the manufacturing industry. The project will focus on what additional resources have to be assigned for the conversion into a realistic visual representation when using 3D building models in in industry for visualization. A virtual reality-based collaborative environment (VRCE) with comprehensive functionality and customisability, low hardware requirements and a portable platform will be developed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed research. The virtual tools also provide possibilities for different stakeholders to come together and discuss complex solutions and also see details otherwise not possible with a physical prototype. For example could an engine team look inside an engine and follow channels and interior details otherwise only possible if cutting the engine into parts, a very costly activity.  

The goal of the scientific work is to achieve genuine concurrent engineering, beyond front-loading, through immersive application in product design, production and learning environments where immersive technology can be used as a dashboard for key performance indicator (KPI) monitoring and planning.

The applicant must have a background and a PhD degree in information systems, computer science or other subject relevant to informatics with a focus on work-integrated learning, such as any of the reference disciplines (see subject description). Qualifications from virtual media, automation, production technology, interaction design, behavioural/cognitive sciences or information and human-machine interaction are of particular interest.

The position is mainly for applicants who have a PhD or achieved equivalent scientific expertise not more than five years before the application deadline. Good collaborative ability is a requirement for the employment. Ability to teach in English is a requirement and the ability to teach in Swedish is meritorious.

Ranking criteria
Special importance will be given to scientific skills in the subject field. In addition, the degree of administrative proficiency will be assessed, as well as the ability to take responsibility for and undertake teaching in all levels as well as in postgraduate studies with regard to the subject. Furthermore, the degree of skill in developing and leading activities at the university will be considered, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues and the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work. When assessing skills, abilities consideration is given to the subject area of the employment, subject description and tasks described above.


  • Experience of planning, initiation, management and development of research applications and projects. Merit for the job is also international contact areas and academic networks.
  • Particular emphasis is also placed on documented skills to disseminate and apply research and development results in close collaboration with global companies and organizations and/or communication and collaboration in cross-functional and multi-cultural organizations/environments.

Terms of employment
The employment is fulltime and limited for four (4) years.

An associate senior lecturer who is employed under HF 12 a § at a university, can apply for promotion to senior lecturer at the university, if he or she is qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer and is deemed suitable for such a position during assessment, according to the criteria the university has decided to apply in a matter of promotion to the senior lecturer. Such promotion involves a permanent employment as a senior lecturer.
