Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.

Ph.D. Studentship in Production Technology – Specializing in metallurgy and characterization of high-alloyed steels produced by Additive Manufacturing.

University West, Department of Engineering Science, Division of Subtractive and Additive Manufacturing

Within the Department of Engineering Science, University West has a specific research environment in Production Technologies which includes research portfolios in Industrial Automation, Thermal Spraying, Additive Manufacturing, and Welding. The largest research area today is additive manufacturing (AM) including both powder bed fusion (PBF) AM as well as directed energy deposition (DED) AM. It involves a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from three different divisions within the department, including modelling, simulation, process control, metallurgy, mechanical characterization, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). The research related to PBF AM is led within the Division of Subtractive and Additive Manufacturing, to which this Ph.D. project belongs. You can find more information about our research environment under this link: University West - Production Technology (hv.se)

The Department of Engineering strives for equality and diversity within all professional groups. We welcome applicants from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. For us, it goes without saying that we have an inclusive working climate and that our employees can combine work with active parenting.

The scientific part of the project

This Ph.D. project will focus on improving the understanding of the relationship between AM process parameters, microstructure, static and dynamic mechanical properties, and corrosion properties of additively manufactured produced high-alloyed steels. In addition, the application of post-processing such as heat treatments or hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and the investigation of imperfections and defects by using non-destructive testing (NDT) will be considered to optimize the resulting microstructure and properties for highly demanding industrial components.

To conduct this research, the Ph.D. student will have University West as the main working place. However, as the research is done in close collaboration with industry, if needed the Ph.D. student will conduct experiments outside of University West in collaboration with research partners.

Doctoral degree program: Production Technology

Job description:

The research program includes, in addition to participation in third-cycle courses and other activities, the implementation of independent thesis work. For doctoral students, the employment period is primarily devoted to research. A doctoral student may, however, be engaged to a limited extent in education and administration duties. Such duties cannot occupy more than 20 percent of full-time working hours. (Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 5 section 2). Any departmental service concerning education is mainly carried out within the teaching field of engineering.

Eligibility requirements:

To qualify for employment as a doctoral student, two eligibility requirements must be met: 1) basic eligibility and 2) special eligibility.

1) The basic eligibility requirements for doctoral programs as set out in the Higher Education Ordinance are as follows:

  • A degree at master’s level, completed courses totaling at least 240 university credits of which a minimum of 60 at master’s level or, substantially equivalent knowledge gained in some other way whether in Sweden or abroad.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English (documented).

2) To fulfill the special eligibility requirements for a doctoral degree in Production Technology, a student must:

hold a degree at master’s level (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to the doctoral degree subject. This degree may be in Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Metal Additive Manufacturing, Welding, or equivalent, with a thesis project corresponding to at least half a year of study. The eligibility requirements may be fulfilled by studies in Sweden or abroad.

Additional mandatory qualifications:

  • Documented experience in SEM-EDS characterization.
  • Documented knowledge in metal manufacturing processing involving fusion, such as additive manufacturing, and/or welding, and/or similar processes.

Other qualifications of merit include:

  • Experience in computational thermodynamics (ThermoCalc, etc) is preferred.
  • Experience in research work and scientific writing (prior publications in the subject are regarded as merit).
  • Knowledge in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish is regarded as merit.

To be successful in this application, the candidate should be highly motivated, have an accurate way of working, and have good communication and collaborative skills. The applicant should have a strong aptitude for analysis and problem-solving of physical problems that relate to the industry. In the selection process interviewing, referencing, and proofreading may be relevant.

The basic factor for selection among qualified applicants is the ability to profit from such a program. For more information, please read 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 in General syllabus for the third-cycle program in Production Technology, Daybook nr U 2021/160

Duration and terms of employment:

Employment as a doctoral student shall be on an open-ended basis but not for longer than a specific point in time and never for a period extending more than one year after receiving the doctoral degree. The initial appointment must not be for more than one year. The appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. The position corresponds to four years of full-time studies over a maximum of eight years. (Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 5 section 7). If 20% of the working hours are dedicated to education and administration, the employment duration will be extended to 5 years.

Application

The application is made digitally via University West's recruitment tool Varbi:University West - Job opportunities (hv.se) It is your responsibility to ensure the application is complete as per the vacancy notice, and that the University receives it by the final application deadline.

The application must include:

You must include the following in your application (preferable in .pdf format):

  • CV/Personal qualifications
  • Personal letter containing:
    • Interest in the research topic
    • Previous experience regarding the proposed research topic and its research methods and scientific theories
    • Motivation to pursue doctoral studies
  • Degree project of second level of higher education (master thesis)
