Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.

Production Technology West
Production Technology West (PTW) is the largest research group at University West and has been a prioritized research environment since 2008. The research group conducts internationally renowned research in close collaboration with the industry. The research concentrates primarily on the development of production processes within the manufacturing industry with focus on welding, machining, additive manufacturing, thermal spraying, automation, inspection and control. The team also performs research on computer simulation, automation engineering and non destructive testing. One of the overarching goals within the research environment is to achieve sustainable production processes.

PTW is organized in three divisions (the division of production systems, the division of additive and subtractive manufacturing and the division of welding technology), each with a well-defined research strategy.

The division of production systems comprises about 25 coworkers and is divided into two sub groups:

  • Process control with a focus on feedback control and sensors. The main process considered is welding and the group work in close synergy with the division of welding technology.
  • Industrial automation with a focus on flexible automation. The group works mainly with AI, multi-agent systems and simulation-based methods to configure, program and optimize industrial automated production.

Role description
In close collaboration with the head of the division of production systems you will be responsible for the long term research vision and to further develop the strategy for the research conducted in the field of automation.  

Your main duties will be to plan for the research activities at the division, manage ongoing projects and develop the research groups within the subject field. You are expected to plan and write grant proposals in line with the long term vision and maintain and develop collaborations between academia and industry. You will be an important representative of the division at internal and external activities.

The position will also include tasks normally assigned to a professor/associate professor, such as conducting your own research, teaching, supervision and administrative duties.

Qualifications
The position requires great knowledge of the research process as well as documented experience and skills in initiating, developing and conducting research. You have the ability to develop research strategies and focus on both short- and long term goals. Your research interests should supplement or strengthen the existing profile of the division. It is important that you possess the necessary personal capabilities to fully carry out the duties of the appointment in collaboration with the rest of the group. Excellent oral and written communications skills in English is expected.

Experience of leadership of externally funded projects as well as experience of leading and developing research teams is considered a great asset. We prefer that you have extensive experience of applying for and receive external research fundings in collaboration with the industry. Documented experience of teaching and supervision at MSc and PhD level will be considered meritorious.

The position also requires that you fulfill the qualifications for professor or associate professor as stated below:

Qualifications for professor:

  • Extensive experience to conduct independent research that significantly exceed what is required for associate professor according to practice in the field of automation or similar is required.
  • Demonstrated pedagogical skills. Applicants who do not have a pedagogical education are expected to undergo such training within two years from the time of employment.

Qualifications for associate professor:

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent competence within the field of automation or similar and obtained competence as associate professor/docent.
  • Demonstrated pedagogical skills. Applicants who do not have a pedagogical education are expected to undergo such training within two years from the time of employment.

Assessment criteria
Special importance will be given to the ability to develop research- and educational activities in collaboration with colleagues and surrounding community. In addition, scientific and pedagogical skills in the subject field will be assessed. The subject field of the employment, the field description and work tasks will be taken into account when evaluating the applicants skills.

Terms of employment
The employment is a permanent position on full-time basis.
