University West, Department of Mechanical Engineering

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.

University West is looking for a lecturer or a senior lecturer in welding technology

This lecturer or senior lecturer position is within the Division of Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Engineering Science at University West. This division constitutes an important pillar of University West's complete academic environment in Production Technology. With about 70 researchers, research engineers, and PhD students, it carries out research on welding, metal additive manufacturing (AM), and thermal spray manufacturing processes with the overarching goal of improving quality, efficiency, and reducing our environmental footprint. The Production Technology research facility has state-of-the-art equipment, including welding and AM systems for laser beam, electron beam, and arc including GTA, GMA, SAW, WAAM. It also has a very well-equipped material characterisation lab with, among other things, electron microscopy, material testing, and physical simulation machine (Gleeble). Research on welding and welding-based AM is conducted mainly experimentally and through modelling and simulation to understand, develop, and improve processes, process monitoring and control, microstructure, and mechanical performance for a variety of metal alloys. This multi-disciplinary and collaborative research is distinguished by close collaboration with industry and is largely externally funded.

Job description

Your responsibilities will involve participating in ongoing research projects and actively securing funding for future projects for yourself and others (e.g., PhD students). Your research will focus on welding and AM with an emphasis on electric arc heat sources. We expect a blend of creativity, focus, independence, and initiative, coupled with teamwork skills. You will engage in project management to some extent, and as a member of the teaching faculty, you will be expected to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and supervise degree thesis projects.

Eligibility requirements

Eligibility requirements for employment as a lecturer:

- Must hold a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with a focus on welding, or equivalent scientific competence or have the equivalent academic expertise or some other form of professional skill that is relevant to the subject content of the post and the duties related to the position (Chap. 4, Art. 4, HF).

In addition, the position requires:

  • A good track record regarding high-quality, independent scientific research
  • Track record of successful grant applications
  • Documented experience with electric arc welding processes, possibly additive manufacturing of metals with electric arc
  • Documented experience with teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
  • Good teamwork skills

In addition, the following requirements must be met for employment as a senior lecturer:

  • A good track record of successful grant applications
