Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.
The Division of Mechanical Engineering University West is seeking a postdoc with expertise in process understanding, metallurgy, and modeling of nickel-based superalloys to study additive manufacturing. The main processes currently studied at the division include gas metal arc welding, plasma welding, laser welding, friction welding, additive manufacturing (AM) with Directed Energy Deposition (DED) using electric arc and wire (WAAM), laser and wire (LMDw), laser and blown powder (LMDp), and powder bed fusion with laser or electron beam (PBF-LB and PBF-EB). The postdoc will work within the ongoing PODFAM project. PODFAM aims to develop a fundamental process understanding that will enable reliable manufacturing of AM parts using PBF techniques and various types of materials. It is conducted in collaboration with industrial partners and combines research areas such as process monitoring and control, physical process modeling and simulation, non-destructive testing, and metallurgy.
The research work will be conducted in collaboration with other researchers who primarily contribute to the project through expertise in metallurgy, process development, and process physics. The postdoc will work on the process development of nickel-based materials to enhance understanding regarding the formation of defects, such as cracks.
Eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has completed a doctoral degree in production technology or equivalent field that the employer deems relevant to the position, or who has equivalent scientific competence. This qualification requirement must be met by the time the appointment decision is made. Preferably, the person should have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the appointment decision is made. In special circumstances, such a degree may have been completed earlier. The default for a postdoctoral appointment is full-time employment. For more information, please refer to the postdoctoral agreement on the Swedish Agency for Government Employers' website.
As some of the work described is anticipated to be conducted in close collaboration with other research groups and with industry, we are looking for a good team-player with an amicable disposition to cooperate with project partners and travel to external collaborator sites if necessary.
Documented experience in modeling AM processes is highly desirable and will be considered a significant merit. The following skills will also be meritorious:
A postdoc appointment is a time-limited position primarily focused on research and intended as a first career step after obtaining a doctoral degree. In addition to what is stipulated by the Employment Protection Act (1982:80), a postdoctoral researcher can be employed indefinitely, but for a minimum of two and a maximum of three years. Extensions may be granted for special reason.
The selection process may involve sample lectures, work samples, interviews, and reference checks.
