Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. We are looking for a senior lecturer in Financial Economics

Role description and tasks

The position involves research and teaching in economics and finance for both undergraduates and the Master in finance program. The position involves teaching key areas of finance such as corporate finance, and equity valuation. financial economics, fixed income, financial institutions and risk management, financial reporting, and analysis as well as entrepreneurial finance.

The tasks include teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and at the master courses, managing courses, being responsible for quality assurance, and developing pedagogy and teaching materials. You are expected to be able to teach in English and Swedish. Within research, the senior lecturer will conduct, manage, publish, and develop their research and actively pursue external funding. You are expected to have an active research agenda and experience in applying for external research grants. The duties also include competence development, which includes continuously developing both subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge and skills, as well as interacting with the surrounding society. An important part of the position is to actively participate in the development and activities of the department and the subject area. The Department of Economics’ researchers and teachers are expected to contribute to a vibrant research environment and the department's other activities and mainly conduct their work at the workplace.

Eligibility requirements for employment as a senior lecturer:

- Demonstrated teaching proficiency (Chap. 4, Art. 4, HF). Applicants who 
lack teaching qualifications from an academic environment should have 
competence that equates to the university’s eligibility requirements, although 
this could have been gained by means other than in an academic 
environment.

- Completion of higher education teacher training of at least ten weeks, or 
equivalent competence. If the applicant has not completed higher education 
teacher training, the appointment may be made, provided the individual 
completes such training during the first two years of the appointment.

- Must hold a doctoral degree or have the equivalent academic expertise or 
some other form of professional skill that is relevant to the subject content of 
the post and the duties related to the position (Chap. 4, Art. 4, HF).

Employment as a senior lecturer is regulated by the Swedish Higher Education 
Ordinance (1993:100).

The employment also requires: 

  • Doctoral degree with a specialization in finance or equivalent 
  • Experience of teaching and research in Finance
  • Demonstrated teaching skills in Finance.
  • Active research agenda.
  • Experience working with econometric methods and econometric analysis.
  • Ability to teach and examine in English and Swedish
  • Drive and ability to cooperate and respect the environment.

The applicant must be able to interact with both students and colleagues and to participate continuously and frequently in the development of research and teaching in the department and the subject area, not least through physical presence in the department.

The following skills will be considered meritorious:

  • Broad experience in research and teaching in key areas of finance such as corporate finance, and equity valuation. financial Economics, fixed income, financial institutions and risk Management, financial reporting & analysis as well as entrepreneurial finance.
  • Clearly documented interest in research and teaching in Finance
  • Research and teaching experience in data analytics or fintech.
  • Experience with applications of data analytics in finance or Economics.
  • Experience of course development and course responsibility.
  • Experience in teaching economic courses, especially macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics.
  • Experience in supervising master's theses.
  • Experience of and familiarity with applying for external research grants.
  • Experience from relevant work outside academia

 In our assessment, teaching proficiency and academic expertise will be weighted equally and placed first. Ability to collaborate, administrative proficiency, management proficiency and other professional skills will be weighted equally and placed second.

When appointing a senior lecturer, as much care should be taken with assessing teaching proficiency as in assessing other aspects of eligibility.

The position is a permanent position. A six-month probationary period may be applied.
