Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.
Automation, monitoring, and control in advanced manufacturing are important parts of production technology to ensure robust processes with high productivity with the right quality. University West has been conducting successful research in the field of industrial automation for several years. The focus of the research is mainly on using AI-based methods to configure, program, monitor, and control industrial production.
Role description
The goal of the employment is to conduct own research in automation e.g., process monitoring and control with a specific focus on applied AI. The employment also involves conducting research in ongoing projects in the automation area with a focus on process monitoring and control. The purpose is to develop methods for flexible automation. The work is of an industrial nature where practical experiments are evaluated with the help of demonstrators.
In the field of production technology, the Department of Engineering conducts research as well as education at the undergraduate, master's, and postgraduate levels. The research is largely externally funded and consists of projects, funded by, for example, Vinnova and the Knowledge Foundation. In addition to research, other important tasks are participation in the university's and department's development work as well as teaching and supervision of students in various courses.
The employment involves driving the university's commitment to the field of automation with a focus on process control and monitoring and conducting experimental studies with associated analysis that will form the basis for publications in international journals and report results to the projects. Common tasks in research are to develop new methods for applied AI, plan and carry out validation experiments, evaluate these with different methods, write reports, and journal articles and present the results at project meetings and conferences. An important task is to participate in the supervision of doctoral students and participate in the development of new research applications to obtain a lectureship in the field. The work will for the most part be carried out at the Production Technology Center.
Qualifications
Completed doctoral degree in applied machine learning, automation technology, or equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, it should come into question who has completed a doctoral degree or has reached the equivalent competence no more than five years before the time for applying for the position as an assistant university lecturer has expired. However, even those who have completed a doctorate or have achieved equivalent competence in the past may be considered if there are special reasons, according to ch. 4. § 4 a HF.

We consider that teaching proficiency and academic expertise should be equally weighted and given priority, and ability to collaborative, administrative proficiency and other professional skills should be equally weighted and given second priority. In third place is management proficiency.
An associate senior lecturer may be employed until further notice, although for a minimum period of four years and maximum of six years. The appointment may be extended if special reasons exist (Chap. 4, Art. 4a, HF).
The purpose of the appointment is for the teacher to be given an opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and qualify both academically and pedagogically to meet eligibility requirements for a position as a senior lecturer.
An associate senior lecturer who is employed at a higher education institution pursuant to Section 12a must, on application, be promoted to senior lecturer at the higher education institution, if he or she is eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, and is assessed as suitable for such an appointment in accordance with the assessment criteria that the higher education institution has decided, must be applied to an application for promotion to senior lecturer. Such a promotion entails indefinite employment as a senior lecturer.
