Högskolan Väst, Institutionen för ingenjörsvetenskap

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.

Associate senior lecturer in automation specializing in modeling and ontology

The research environment Production Technology West works with the development of production processes within the manufacturing industry. The research environment's focus areas are thermal spraying, welding, additive manufacturing, cutting processing and flexible industrial automation. The research is mostly externally funded and consists of a number of projects, financed by, among others, the KK Foundation and Vinnova. Around 90 researchers at University West are active within the research environment Production Technology West. Distinctive for Produktionsteknik Väst is the researchers' close collaboration with industry. The group is located at Production Technology Center, PTC, which is run jointly by Innovatum Science Park, GKN Aerospace and University West. In the Production Technology Center premises, there is a very well-equipped workshop technology laboratory that the researchers and their partners use. Production Technology West has lively international cooperation and many foreign employees. The focus area flexible industrial automation is an important part of the production technology area to ensure high productivity with the right quality. University West has been conducting successful research in the field of industrial automation for several years. The focus of the research is mainly on high flexibility through a concept called Plug&Produce where AI and multi-agent are important pieces of the puzzle. The group works on developing new otologies and models to configure and optimize industrial production. The area is facing an expansion in both ongoing research and teaching, whereby the group needs to be strengthened with an associate lecturer.

Role description

The goal of the appointment is to contribute to the group's development and renewal by conducting own research in industrial automation with a focus on modeling and ontology as a further development of the concepts connected to multi-agent and AI. The position also involves conducting research that connects to the group's ongoing projects in the field of automation with a focus on flexible automation. The work is of an industrial nature where practical trials are evaluated using demonstrators with high industrial relevance. Particular importance is therefore attached to the implementation of models, algorithms, and ontologies.

In the area of production technology, the Department of Engineering conducts research and education at the undergraduate, master’s, and postgraduate levels. The research is mostly externally funded and consists of several projects, financed by, for example, the EU, Vinnova, and the KK Foundation.

Alongside the research, other important duties are participation in the development work of the university and the department as well as teaching and supervising students in various courses.

The position involves driving the university's commitment to the field of industrial automation with a focus on flexibility, conducting experimental investigations with associated implementation and analysis that will be the basis for publications in international journals and reporting results to the projects. Common tasks in research are building advanced computer models, programming, planning and conducting experiments, evaluating these with various methods, writing reports, and journal articles, and presenting the results at project meetings and conferences. An important task is to participate in the development of new research applications together with relevant industry and to participate in the supervision of doctoral students with the aim of obtaining a lectureship in automation.
