PhD student in work-integrated learning (WIL) – Management and governance of workplace learning

University West announces a PhD student in work-integrated learning, with a particular focus on management and governance of workplace learning.

Subject Description
Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is a multidisciplinary postgraduate education subject primarily related to the social sciences. The subject is defined by the fact that problems are focused on the relationship between working life and learning. Working life is broadly defined and also includes other forms than traditional paid work. The concept of learning is understood in a broad sense and encompasses processes of change and socialization linked to knowledge and competence. Interest is linked to the conditions, organization, processes, content, forms and consequences of working and learning. Research in the subject includes, but is not limited to, studies on the changing workplace, the relationship between education and work, and social conditions for learning in work. The focus of the studies can be individuals, groups, organizations, mechanisms or structures. The research is characterized by collaboration with the surrounding community.

Doctoral student's scientific work in the project
Workplace learning is a prerequisite for development, efficiency and competitiveness, not least by enabling continuous improvement of organizations' production processes and systems. The doctoral student's scientific work revolves around how management and governance in organizations enable or hinder learning in workplaces. Effects on learning can be expected to be linked to how management and governance are designed and practiced, but they can also vary depending on contextual differences. Particular interest is directed to the conditions under which management and governance operate in the form of digitalisation, communication and accounting. Overall, the dissertation will aim to increase the understanding of the role of management and governance for workplace learning.
