Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is University West’s overarching profile and basic principle applied to learning, the exchange of ideas, and educational development. The government has assigned the distinguished task of developing WIL to University West. Work integrated learning in education and research develops new, relevant and advanced knowledge both within the academy and among its partners, which also benefits society in general. University West offers a wide variety of study programs, has a good number of applicants and the students show a high entry rate on the labor market. The main research environments at University West are Production technology, Learning in and for the new working life and Child and youth studies and is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding society. Campus is centrally located in Trollhättan with about 13,000 students and 700 employees.

University West is looking for an associate senior lecturer in automation with a focus on optimisation.

The research environment Production Technology West is working on the development of production processes in the manufacturing industry. Focus areas are thermal spraying, welding, cutting, machining and flexible industrial automation. About 70 researchers at University West conduct their research in the vital research environment Production Technology West. A speciality of the Production Technology West environment is the close cooperation of the researchers with the industry. The group is located at the Production Technology Center, PTC, which is jointly run by Innovatum Technology Park, GKN Aerospace and University West. At the Production Technology Centre’s premises, the researchers and their partners use a very well equipped engineering laboratory. Production Technology West also has a lively international collaboration and many foreign employees.

Optimisation of automated manufacturing is an important part of production technology to ensure high productivity with quality. University West has been working with excellent research within industrial automation for many years. The focus has been model-based methods for configuration, programming and optimisation of industrial automated production.

Tasks
The purpose of the position is to conduct research within flexible automation with a focus on optimisation related to on-going projects. The employment involves development of new methods for flexible automation. The on-going research work has a strong connection to the industry and demonstrators are used the evaluate results.

The main task will be to develop the area of automation with a focus on optimisation, conduct experiments, publish result in international journals and report back to on-going projects. Typical tasks might be to create advanced computer models, programming of scenarios, conduct experiments, report result to project partners both orally and in written reports.  Other task might be to supervise PhD students, teach and apply for new projects together with industry. The goal is to qualify for a permanent position at the University. The main part of the work will be carried out at Production Technology Centre in Trollhättan.

In the field of production technology, the Department of Engineering Science conducts research and education at undergraduate, master's and PhD level. The research is mainly financed externally and consist of projects funded by e.g. Vinnova and KK-foundation. In addition to the research, it is important to participate in the development of the University and the department concerning teaching and supervision.

Prerequisite
A PhD degree within production technology with a specialization in automation or similar related fields related to the position.

The position is mainly for applicants who have a PhD or achieved equivalent scientific expertise not more than five years before the application deadline. Good collaborative ability is a requirement for the employment. Ability to teach in English is a requirement and the ability to teach in Swedish is meritorious.

Ranking criteria
Special importance will be given to scientific skills in the subject field. In addition, the degree of administrative proficiency will be assessed, as well as the ability to take responsibility for and undertake teaching in the existing master's program "Robotics and Automation", as well as in postgraduate studies with regard to the subject. Furthermore, the degree of skill in developing and leading activities at the university will be considered, as well as the ability to interact with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work.

  • Documented teaching in courses within the Master's program "Robotics and Automation", such as optimization, automation, AI, programming and simulation.
  • Automation research that can be linked to any manufacturing process performed by automation. 

Terms of employment
The employment is limited for four years.

An associate senior lecturer who is employed under HF 12 a § at a university, can apply for promotion to senior lecturer at the university, if he or she is qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer and is deemed suitable for such a position during assessment, according to the criteria the university has decided to apply in a matter of promotion to the senior lecturer. Such promotion involves a permanent employment as a senior lecturer.
